Estimating the Number of Vertices in Convex Polytopes

چکیده
Estimating the number of vertices of a convex polytope defined by a system of linear inequalities is crucial for bounding the run-time of exact generation methods. It is not easy to achieve a good estimator, since this problem belongs to the #P complexity class. In this paper we present two randomized algorithms for estimating the number of vertices in polytopes. The first is based on the well-known Multilevel Splitting technique. The second, called Stochastic Enumeration, is an improvement of Knuth’s backtrack algorithm. Both methods are shown to bring a significant variance reduction, and outperform the current stateof-the-art in test cases.

Constructions for 4-Polytopes and the Cone of Flag Vectors
We describe a construction for d-polytopes generalising the well known stacking operation. The construction is applied to produce 2-simplicial and 2-simple 4-polytopes with g2 = 0 on any number of n ≥ 13 vertices. In particular, this implies that the ray l1, described by Bayer (1987), is fully contained in the convex hull of all flag vectors of 4-polytopes. Especially interesting examples on 9,...
متن کاملAdaptive Estimation of Convex Sets and Convex Polytopes from Noisy Data
We estimate convex polytopes and general convex sets in R, d ≥ 2 in the regression framework. We measure the risk of our estimators using a L-type loss function and prove upper bounds on these risks. We show that, in the case of polytopes, these estimators achieve the minimax rate. For polytopes, this minimax rate is lnn n , which differs from the parametric rate for non-regular families by a l...
متن کاملDecomposition and Parallelization Techniques for Enumerating the Facets of 0/1-polytopes
A convex polytope can either be described as convex hull of vertices or as solution set of a nite number of linear inequalities and equations. Whereas both representations are equivalent from a theoretical point of view, they are not when optimization problems over the polytope have to be solved. Moreover, it is a challenging task in practical computation to convert one description into the oth...
متن کاملExtremal Edge Polytopes
The edge polytope of a finite graph G is the convex hull of the columns of its vertex-edge incidence matrix. We study extremal problems for this class of polytopes. For k ∈ {2, 3, 5}, we determine the maximal number of vertices of kneighborly edge polytopes up to a sublinear term. We also construct a family of edge polytopes with exponentially-many facets.
متن کاملRepresentations and characterizations of vertices of bounded-shape partition polytopes
Consider a ®nite set whose elements are associated with vectors of common dimension. A partition of such a set is associated with a matrix whose columns are the sums of the vectors corresponding to each part. The partition polytope associated with a class of partitions (that share the number of parts) is then the convex hull of the corresponding matrices. We derive representations and character...
